Thanks Robin,

The concrete arrived last week so the based is complete. The shed has been ordered and should arrive around 9th Nov. Brother-in-law has already sorted me the bits for the pillar and once the shed is up I’ll be able to give him exact measurements for the box section so he can weld it all together. It’s looking like my target of completion by end 2009 is still achievable :-)

Glad you found time to come along and visit us, we welcome visitors with open arms. Hope you enjoyed Thijs, he has now moved on to bigger things now and has left Sheffield Uni, We hope to find some more Uni guys as they are on the door step and do not charge too much to come and give us a talk.

The night sky is being lost to the light pollution these days :(
But get out of the city and find a good dark location, sit back and look in awe at the heavens...if the clouds ever move that is ;)

Hi Robert and thanks for your question.

It looks like the next occultation of Venus is not going to be for some time; sources believe the next Venus occultation to be on 6th April 2016, then 19th June 2020, then 10th January 2032. I've not checked these dates out myself though.

There are free software applications LOW, OCCULT, and Occult Watcher that you can use to build up your own schedule of occultations; again I've not had time at the moment to use these so can't personally vouch for there quality.

Not sure where in the UK you are based but here is a schedule for occultations visible from East Anglia.

Could anyone please tell me when the next occultation of Venus by The Moon, visible in the UK, will be?
Is there any person or organization that e-mails lists of up-coming astronomical events?
Kindest regards, Robert.

Your suggestion regarding binoculars is good advice, but it is interesting how much there is to see out there without any lenses at all. It takes a lot of 'hands-free' stargazing to get to know the sky well and this book is a solid guide if that is your plan. It happens to be the cheapest form of astronomy also, which is worth bearing in mind at times like these!

There is some really good star gazing with or without binoculars. I agree start simple and work your way up to a telescope. Watch out for the cheapies though.
